AGE is a specialist consulting firm that provides advice on hydrogeological issues and groundwater modelling. AGE was founded in 1997 and now consists of 20 full-time professional staff making us one of Australia’s largest independent, employee-owned consultancies specialising in groundwater sciences. Our team of principal consultants have each worked in the industry for more than 20 years and understand clients’ needs and expectations.
We service our clients in Australia and the Australasian region from our head office in Brisbane, Queensland. We also have an office in Newcastle, New South Wales. We provide advice on groundwater to a wide client base including the mining, petroleum, infrastructure, agriculture, government, aid and legal sectors.
We assist our clients with government approvals, operational groundwater management, geotechnical issues, water supply, water quality issues, numerical modelling, bore installation and routine monitoring.
The management of water resources involves the successful interaction of our clients, governments and communities. At AGE we understand that for these groups to make good decisions regarding water resources they require good data and advice, especially where there is uncertainty. Our mission is to empower our clients, and those that use our work, with information that allows them to make informed decisions on managing groundwater.
We do this by relying on our core values of knowledge, trust and accountability. We manage our accumulated knowledge so it benefits our clients and ensures delivery of quality work. We are accountable to our clients and each other, and these values drive the high standards required to achieve successful outcomes.
We are experienced in:
- developing groundwater supplies – for towns, villages, mines, irrigation, stock, and domestic purposes;
- assessing impacts from resource projects on groundwater systems;
- navigating the regulatory requirements for groundwater management and development;
- designing dewatering and groundwater control needs around mines and deep excavations;
- contributing to mine closure and rehabilitation studies;
- reviewing work of our peers and providing third party opinions;
- acting as expert witnesses in court;
- assessing groundwater to assist in the development, management and closure of landfills; and
- simulating groundwater flow using analytical and numerical models.
AGE employees come from geological science and engineering backgrounds, most with further masters or doctorate level qualifications in hydrogeology or numerical modelling.
Since the inception of AGE in 1997, the company has completed over 1000 consulting projects for a variety of clients across the mining, petroleum, engineering, agriculture, property development and government sectors. This includes major studies for mining projects across Australia and internationally.
We have the largest team of groundwater professionals on the East Coast of Australia with 16 full-time professionals in our head office in Brisbane, Queensland, 5 people in our Newcastle office and 4 people in our Townsville office. The Principals at AGE have worked in the industry between 20 and 30 years, during which time they have developed a wealth of experience and an appreciation of client needs and expectations.
The professional team are motivated and experienced in numerical modelling, drilling techniques, environmental impact studies and project management. Staff are supported by up-to-date computing facilities with specialist seepage, groundwater flow, groundwater contaminant transport modelling and GIS programs and capabilities.
Director / Principal / Lead – Projects team
James Tomlin is a Director and Principal Hydrogeologist at AGE, who has been with the company for over 17 years since 2000.
James has over 20 years’ experience as a hydrogeologist in the consulting industry and is a skilled manager of groundwater investigations for major projects, focused on providing clients with robust technical and strategic advice. He has successfully delivered complex and high profile groundwater studies for mining, extractive industry and government sectors. James shares his knowledge and skills throughout the company in his role as Project Lead, ensuring the quality of the groundwater service delivered to all clients.
Director / Principal / Lead – Modelling team
Andrew Durick is a Director and Principal Modeller at AGE, who has been with the company for over 10 years.
Andrew has over 20 years’ experience in groundwater modelling and groundwater consulting. He has an intimate working knowledge of MODFLOW (industry standard modelling code), having investigated improvements to how the model overcomes non-linearities in the numerical solution of the groundwater flow equation. He has worked in both the public and private sectors, with the last 10 years focused on groundwater modelling for the mining and resources sectors. Andrew shares his knowledge and skills throughout the company in his role as Modelling Lead, ensuring a high level of quality and continued advancement in groundwater modelling at AGE.
Duncan Irvine has over 25 years’ experience in hydrogeology and engineering geology, much of which has focussed on environmental studies
in relation to groundwater for a range of mining and infrastructure projects. Since joining AGE in 2008, this has involved managing groundwater studies to support environmental approvals for projects for the mining, resource and government sectors.
Costante is a registered professional hydrogeologist and environmental scientist (RPGeo AIG) with 20 years’ experience in both Australia and Europe.
Costante has worked across Australia in a range of industries and sectors, including mining, infrastructure and oil and gas. His experience includes groundwater impact assessments, bore census and water supply, tailings facility studies, mineral exploration, mine geology/grade control, geotechnical studies and mine environmental studies.
Operations Manager / Principal
Tim is a Principal Hydrogeologist. He has a BAppSc and MAppSc in Hydrogeology and 10 years’ experience in the consulting industry.
Since joining AGE in 2009, Tim has concentrated on managing groundwater studies to support environmental approvals for the mining and resource sectors. Tim manages AGEs team of field hydrogeologists and ensures all field work is conducted in a safe manner and that the results can be used in conceptual and numerical models.
Laura Bellis is a senior hydrogeologist with 13 years’ experience in hydrogeological consultancy for industrial, mining and government clients around the world.
Laura has undertaken investigations of hydrogeological and hydrological systems both conceptually and numerically to provide practical and pragmatic solutions to client problems. Laura has been involved in all aspects of projects, from proposal preparation through to site visits, data analysis and interpretation, production of technical reports and presentations for clients and stakeholders.
Principal Consultant / North Queensland Regional Manager
Angela Bush is a highly qualified Hydrogeologist with ten years’ experience across several sectors including consulting, research and education.
Angela specialises in integrated groundwater assessments, contaminant investigations, and geochemical analyses. She has detailed knowledge of groundwater systems in various settings, specifically focusing on fractured rock groundwater flow systems of North Queensland. Her clients have encompassed metalliferous and coal mines, government, and agriculture bodies. Angela joined AGE in March 2017 and heads up the North Queensland office in Townsville.
Neil has over ten years’ experience as a groundwater modeller/hydrogeologist, working on coal, iron ore, gold and petroleum projects
both in Australia and overseas. Neil joined AGE in 2010 and has developed complex numerical models, focussing on environmental approvals for the resource sector. Neil has an in depth knowledge of all MODFLOW variants, including MODFLOW SURFACT, MODHMS and MODFLOW-USG. He has advanced working proficiency with parameter optimisation software (e.g. PEST, SCEMA) to calibrate and analyse predictive groundwater models. A particular interest of Neil’s is model uncertainty and the quantification of ‘wrongness’ in groundwater models by applying Monte Carlo methods to numerical groundwater models. Neil has a background in engineering geology, and is also experienced in planning and undertaking monitoring bore installation programs.
