AGE were commissioned to assess the potential to develop groundwater supply for the irrigation of sugar cane as part of a proposed major biofuel project located south-east of Pentland in central Queensland.
To date the work has involved field activities to assess the nature and distribution of permeable alluvial sediments, measure groundwater levels and consider groundwater quality in the context of irrigated agriculture. The collection of this data has enabled an assessment of the total and available groundwater in storage. A groundwater model was developed to further prove up the concept and feasibility of extracting groundwater supplies for irrigation demand from the groundwater resources in the region. The concept of Managed Aquifer Recharge to supplement the irrigation demand was also undertaken using the numerical model which was simulated using MODFLOW-USG. The work was undertaken for Renewable Developments Australia.
